The most cliched New Year’s resolution I have, every year, is to loose weight. And every year I fail. Maybe it’s my early quarter life crisis, but this year I desperately wanted to change my life and did something I never thought possible… I joined a gym.

The main reason I hated gyms and never wanted to touch one up to now was anxiety. I don’t do well in crowds and I have an irrational fear of people watching me exercise. But I need to change. So I signed up with a gym and hired a personal trainer. I am astonished at how much I’m enjoying it.

It’s tough work. I expected that, but from the initial tour, to learning about their cleaning routines, finding everyone who worked there to be genuinely nice, and going at non-peak times has helped ease my anxiety significantly.

It’s also fun to learn about what these training routines do. Every time my trainer shows me a new workout he explains what muscles they work at and what people usually do wrong. I wasn’t expecting to have fun learning about my body, but I’m glad I’m learning because the way I tried loosing weight on my own was wrong. Well, it was okay, but I always plateau after a couple weeks and couldn’t figure out what to do then. Now I know.

So anyway, to make a long story short, now my arms hurt (in a good way) and my biceps look bulgy. It’s quite fun to poke them.
